Understanding Agricultural Science (Submit agribusiness journal) is knowledge of facts, both natural and social that are generally accepted and systematic. Agriculture or agriculture comes from the words ager and culture. Ager means land, or fields, or fields. Cultura means observing, maintaining, plowing. So agriculture means a way of farming (agriculture in the strict sense). While agriculture in the broadest sense according to some world experts is;

  • According to A T Mosher. Agriculture is a type of production process based on the growth process of plants and animals;
  • According to Kaslan. Agriculture is a branch of production where there is a change of inorganic material into organic matter with the help of plants and animals. This process is reproductive, which means an attempt to renew;
  • According to Minderhoko. Agriculture is the use of human power over nature with the aim of directing the development of plants and animals that benefit humans in such a way that it will better meet human needs.

Thus agriculture is a type of business that directly produces to be used for living needs. Broadly speaking, the notion of agriculture includes: 1. Production processes 2. Farmers or entrepreneurs 3. Land where businesses 4. Farming business (Farm Business) Agricultural science starts from the experience of planting various types of plants. This experience resulted in agricultural sciences in the form of applied sciences. Agricultural science can be explained using basic sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, economics, social etc. Basic sciences can explain all the processes that occur in agriculture, so that agricultural science includes soil science, water management, weather and climate, physiology, agricultural biochemistry, agricultural ecology etc. So agricultural science is knowledge about the cultivation of plants and animals that aims to obtain high and sustainable yields to meet the food needs and welfare of human life.

Agricultural science (agricultural study) is a broad field of study that studies agriculture. Like the family of health sciences, this field is part of an applied and multidisciplinary family of life sciences. With the core of biology, this science also utilizes mathematics, statistics, natural sciences, economic and social sciences, and various technologies from other scientific families.

Agricultural science began with Gregor Mendel’s work in the field of genetics, but modern science can be said to begin in the 18th century when chemical fertilizers affected plant physiology. Agricultural intensification began in the 1960s in developed and developing countries, often called the Green Revolution, which was the progress made in selecting and improving the quality of crops and livestock for high productivity, as well as the use of additional inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides. Agriculture is the biggest human intervention in nature, so it impacts the environment in general. Intensive agriculture, industrial agriculture, and increasing population have attracted the attention of agricultural scientists about the importance of developing new farming methods to deal with this. This includes the field of technology which assumes that all solutions to technological problems are in better technology, and agriculture is also technology. The solutions considered start from integrated pest management, waste management, landscape architecture, and genomics.

Agriculture in a broad sense includes all activities that involve the use of living things (including plants, animals and microbes) for the benefit of humans. In a narrow sense, agriculture is also defined as the activity of cultivating certain types of plants, especially those that are seasonal.
All agricultural businesses are basically economic activities that require the same basic knowledge of business place management, seed selection, planting methods, product collection, product distribution, product processing and packaging, and marketing. If a farmer looks at all these aspects with consideration of efficiency in order to achieve maximum profits, he is involved in intensive agriculture. Agricultural business seen in this way is known as agribusiness. Programs and policies that direct agricultural businesses to such perspectives are known as intensification. Because industrial agriculture always implements intensive agriculture, the two are often equated.

The side of industrial agriculture that takes into account the environment is sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture, also known by its variations such as organic agriculture or permaculture, includes aspects of the sustainability of land carrying capacity as well as the environment and local knowledge as important factors in calculating its efficiency. As a result, sustainable agriculture usually results in lower returns than industrial agriculture.

Today’s modern agriculture usually implements several components of the two “ideological” agricultural poles mentioned above. In addition to both, also known forms of extensive agriculture (low input agriculture) which in the most extreme and traditional forms are subsistence farming, which is only done without business motives and solely to meet the needs of themselves or their communities.
